In general, contractors offer two types of asphalt: MB-5 and MB-6. The gravel thickness for MB-5 is 14mm, and for MB-6, it's 6mm.

For MB-5, the larger gravel size makes the asphalt more solid and durable. MB-6, with finer gravel, has a darker, smoother finish, and the gravel is less visible, giving it an aesthetic advantage. You'll need to choose based on your priorities: appearance or greater durability.

The type and thickness of asphalt will depend on the nature of the work, such as residential, commercial, or industrial projects.

What type and thickness of asphalt should I choose for my project

Advantages: Non-slip, easy to maintain, completely waterproof, smooth finish, weather-resistant, prevents moss growth.

Disadvantages: Puncturing (indentation under localized pressure), creeping (deformation) during high temperatures.

It is highly recommended to install a geotextile membrane under the fill. The geotextile membrane contributes to the durability of the asphalt by ensuring a solid foundation and proper water management. It is a key element for long-lasting results.

It is essential to include a slope of at least 2% to allow water to flow toward the street and minimize the risk of cracks or heaving.

It is recommended to wait 6 to 12 months before asphalting your driveway to allow the soil to settle naturally.

While asphalt's sensitivity to heat may seem like a disadvantage, it is actually a significant advantage: asphalt becomes much more flexible over time, making it less affected by freezing and thawing. Therefore, it requires less maintenance and repair.

Do not park your vehicle for 4 to 5 days after laying the asphalt. There are some measures to take in the months following: on hot days, be careful as high temperatures soften asphalt slightly during the first year. Avoid placing heavy objects, chair legs, motorcycle kickstands, or bicycles on it. Also, avoid turning your car's wheels when the vehicle is stationary.

For any oil stains, the first step is to use an absorbent, like cat litter or bird litter. This will remove much of the liquid. Then, use a degreasing cleaner. Spray the product and let it sit. Then, scrub the area with a soft brush. Rinse and repeat until the stain is gone.

Wait at least 3 months, but ideally 1 year, after laying asphalt, once the oils have evaporated, before applying a sealer. To check, sprinkle water on the asphalt for a few seconds; if you see a rainbow, the surface is not yet ready for the sealer. Avoid using acrylic sealers, as they prevent asphalt from breathing and can lead to its degradation. It is recommended to apply a bitumen-based sealer, which will protect the asphalt and restore its original condition.

It is possible that a whitish residue, commonly called efflorescence, may appear on some products (slabs, pavers, walls) upon installation. Efflorescence can also appear 12 to 18 months after installation. This is a normal reaction caused by soluble salts carried by moisture, which crystallize into a fine powder when the water evaporates at the product's surface. This phenomenon occurs with all concrete products and does not affect the structural integrity of the product. In most cases, efflorescence can be cleaned and usually disappears on its own over time. For slabs and pavers, the optimal waiting period before cleaning is 12 to 18 months to allow the efflorescence to fully react. This recommendation aims to prevent efflorescence from reappearing after cleaning.

To effectively clean an entire surface, it is important to first remove stains by choosing the appropriate cleaning product. Once the stains are cleaned, you can proceed to clean the entire surface using the proper product. Never rely on YouTube videos, as it is important to use a product for local aggregates (pavers) since there is a difference between aggregates from other countries. To get these products, you can visit big-box stores or specialty paver shops.

We recommend waiting between 2 to 5 years.
